4 YEARS OF DEBATING

One of my many passions is life is to talk and this has been an asset of mine from a young age. Back then, I used to argue and tried hard to make a valid point out of a pointless conversation, called it a day a declared myself that I won. Creating such scenarios might be fun from time to time but having a sister who does the same thing to me now, I cannot imagine how my parents handled me.

I go to the same school as my brother when I entered secondary school. My brother was a debater and I remember him coming home from school looking super proud because of his achievement in a competition. My mother told me to give debating a try and so I did.

I have joined many competitions but my most memorable one has got to the the Swinburne Sarawak Interschool Debating Championship in the University of Swinburne. This was a competition that was held every year before Chinese New year. I made a lot of memories and new friends there.

Fast forward to where we are now, needless to say I have grown a lot as a person. No more pointless arguments and no more "I win". Discussions are way better. I learned that we should always respect other peoples opinions when it comes to a certain matter because anything aside from facts, there is no wrong answer to it.

I have been debating for the past 4 years now and I did not regret any decision, time, or effort of mine that I have invested in debate since the age of 14. Even though my years of debating are over, I will always cherish the memories and remember how passionate I was and how always will be.

SPORTs DAy!!!

My love for sports started from a young age. Both my dad and brother is active in sports so whenever they played badminton at the yard, I would join in too. I used to admire seeing my dad being so dedicated to sports and being the clueless kid i was, I wanted to feel what he felt. My dad would go jogging every week and there are times I'd join along with my brother too.

I never thought I would join a 200M race in primary school. I was slightly more plump when I was in primary 5 and that was the first time I joined a sports event. Well, I only did because no one else would so I gave it a try. Without any training nor any practice, I'm proud to say that I beat 6 other girls and surprisingly got 2nd place.

When I entered secondary school, I became more interested in the track event during sports day. Everything about sports day just makes me happy. Its the environment of people cheering for each other, the only time when students can unleash their potential in track and field.

I participated every year during my sports day and the most memorable one has to be the last year in school. other than sports day, there was another event organized which was called 'seni tari'. Me and my batchmates practiced day and night to ensure we would make our sports house proud. Until this very day, I made good friends with people who I never interacted with before.

At the end, my sports house got 3rd place overall. Even though we didn't win first place, the spirit we had was all that matter. The fact that we didn't stop cheering even when other sports houses were in the lead during races proves how much spirit we had. Sports day will always have a place in my heart.

WINNING THE GOLD AND BRONZE AWARDS IN A INNOVATION COMPETITION

I was active in my debate but i never tried anything out of my comfort zone. When I was form 5, my 4 friends and I decided to join an international innovation completion called The Young Inventors Challenge in Cyberjaya. No, none of us were great innovators nor were we creative but it was worth a try. An indeed, it was.

Our team was called "The Innolyst" which means innovative catalyst. The invention that we created was called "Chalky All The Way". The motive of this invention is to produce chalks that do not release chalk dusts as it can be very harmful to one's health.

With the same invention, three of my teammates including me joined in other innovation competition called ISTEEX. The competition was held in August during my physics SPM trial so we made sure it was worth it. I actually grew really sick that day but I had to be strong for my teammates. Alhamdulillah, we brought the got the Gold Awards back but i had to take another 2 days of sick leave :')

Now that we were done with ISTEEX, we put all of our attention on YIC in the month of September. The competition was not just a show and tell competition. We had to make a proposal, a 3 minute video and paper writing about our invention. We had multiple meetings, invested our money to make the modal and even cut off our time to study for exams just to make sure everything was perfect.

There were teams from the Philippines, Vietnam, China and many more who also participated in YIC. The chances of winning was low so we did not expect anything because even though we worked really hard, we knew there were inventions that was so much better.

When the results were announced during the closing ceremony, I was SHAKING. they called out out team's name to receive the bronze awards. it still felt like a dream because everything just feels so surreal to be one of the top teams out of hundreds. We made our mentors, school, family and most importantly ourselves very proud! I am very grateful till this very day and it proves that trying something new would be a great experience regardless of the outcome.
